Our Story

Located in the old Cathedral City of Elgin and the famous distilling region of Speyside, Avva Scottish Gin is inspired by the area’s rich distilling heritage from label designs to ingredients.

Our distiller, Jill, launched the liqueur element of the business, Berry Good, in 2008 whilst a student at SAC Craibstone. Her step-up to distilling finally came in 2016, when she purchased her own bespoke, handcrafted Scottish copper still, which she named after her two grandmothers Jessie Sutherland Brown and Jean Bannerman Waters.

This is when Avva was born. Avva means a respected grandmother or elder women in the Indian language of Dravidian and therefore fitting that the still is named after our distillers’ two grandmothers. Avva Scottish Gin is lovingly handcrafted in Jessie-Jean’s bespoke copper still.

Avva made with heart, in the heart of Speyside has a key value which is to maintain authenticity by distilling, infusing, and bottling on-site and by using a quality blend of traditional botanicals with local botanicals from the Highlands and Speyside. We have history, provenance and family that are behind everything we do. Our small-batch craft gin is distilled slowly, blended with traditional, Highland and Speyside botanicals. This is what makes our craft gin special!

Although small, J-J slowly works her magic with the traditional copper still and specially selected botanicals to carefully and lovingly produce the base spirit from which we collect the centre part of the distillate or run, this is referred to as the ‘heart’ – it is only this cut which is used for Avva Scottish Gin.
